Observation Narrative
This plot is similar to CYPR004, being located on a linear, slightly elevated berm at the edge of an extensive and more deeply flooded swamp along the Nottoway River. This habitat is probably flooded during the winter and spring but exposed for most of the growing season. Quercus lyrata (~50 to 75 cm DBH) is the leading canopy dominant in association with Carya aquatica and Fraxinus pennsylvanica. The understory is open and the herb layer is patchy, showing evidence of flood scouring. Bryophyte cover is on the ground and at the base of trees. The site was dry on the date of this survey.
